Does My Website Need More Content?

The short answer is yes, better content or more content within pages on your site is a major ranking factor for any keyword you’re targeting.

But depending on your approach to marketing, this could mean a completely different content structure and amount of pages are needed.

For example, if your primary focus is driving traffic through paid ads the amount of content and what keywords to add to the content on your site is less important. If anything, spending more time focusing on the landing page design and the unique brand messaging will yield the greatest results.

However, if your focus is to generate more organic traffic for your site then SEO and content creation is 100% the way to go.

If you fall in this second bucket, this newsletter is for you.

The foundation for a great website is that every product or service you focus on has a dedicated page and every industry or market segment you are targeting also has a dedicated page.

Here’s a simple audit for figuring out if your site covers the basics:

Step 1: Identify how many services/products you offer

Step 2: Identify the industries/locations/other markets you’re focusing on

Step 3: Use tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and others to audit your site’s current keyword rankings and determine the best keywords to target.

Once you have an idea of how many priority pages you need, you’ll want to research the top 10 to 15 keywords for them based on *keyword difficulty and search volume.

*Keyword difficulty is a scale of 1-100; determining how hard a keyword would be to gain a top 3 ranking.

Step 4: Optimize & create new content for SEO best practices.

To make Google happy each of these pages requires:

  • A 1500 word count minimum
  • At least 5 images on each page
  • An FAQs section to answer common search queries
  • Video content (significantly impacts feature rankings)
  • Cross-linking to 5+ other pages on your site
  • Proper alt tags, schema markup, and meta tags on each page

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 & 4 until you’ve sufficiently ranked for the keywords you’re targeting.

As a final note:

When it comes to getting this done, we recommend not relying on AI-written content as AI-written content will only get you 50-60% of the way to good content.

AI is generally good at creating structure and outlines, but not for full-fledged content production. If anything, only use AI to give you an outline then write the content from that point.

We hope this helps you strategize your approach for 2024 and remember to think of us if you want to talk about this in more detail or would like help planning the best approach to your website and digital marketing goals.
