ChatGPT Just Opened Its Ad Platform to Everyone

For the past few years, digital advertising had a pretty clear map.

  • Google Search for intent.
  • Meta for awareness.
  • Maybe some YouTube or LinkedIn depending on your industry.

Simple. Predictable. Budget-able.

And then on February 9, 2026, OpenAI quietly launched ads inside ChatGPT.

Most companies didn't get access. It was for an exclusive few major advertisers who were invited to participate in the beta.

But now, everyone has access.

What Actually Happened

Here's a number worth sitting with.

ChatGPT processes 2.5 billion prompts every single day.

For context, that's not people passively scrolling like on Meta. These people are actively asking questions, comparing options, researching purchases, and making decisions.

Every single prompt is a high-intent moment.

And for the first three months, only brands willing to commit $200,000 minimum got access.

Then on May 5, 2026, OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager.

  • No minimum spend
  • No OpenAI invite required
  • Any business, any budget

The platform generated $100 million in revenue in its first six weeks.

Before it was even open to small businesses.

How It Works

The ads don't interrupt anything.

ChatGPT generates its response completely independently, the ad system only activates after the answer is finished. Ads appear in clearly labeled, subtly tinted boxes at the bottom of responses. OpenAI's Chief Product Officer put it plainly: "Ads will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you."

That's by design, and it matters. The entire value of advertising here depends on users trusting ChatGPT's answers. The moment ads corrupt the responses, the intent signal that makes this platform valuable disappears.

So they built a wall between the two. The AI answers. Then the ads appear.

Targeting works differently than anything you've used before.

No keyword lists. No demographic checkboxes.

The system reads the full conversation: what the user asked, how they asked it, what they've discussed in past sessions; then it matches ads to context.

A user asking "what's the best CRM for a 10-person sales team" is telling you more about their buying intent than any keyword ever could.

The First-Mover Window Is Open Right Now

Early ChatGPT advertisers are getting three things that late arrivals won't:

Lower costs while competition is still thin. The same thing happened in early Google Ads and early Facebook. Bids are cheap before everyone shows up.

Algorithm influence. OpenAI's ad matching system is learning right now. The campaigns running today are shaping how it understands what "good" ad performance looks like. Early data becomes reference data.

Category ownership. The first brand that shows up consistently in a conversation category becomes the brand users associate with that category. That position gets harder to take later.

The platform is still missing things:

  • CRM integrations
  • Third-party measurement verification
  • Advanced targeting capabilities

All are still in development. That's actually the point.

The brands that figure this out while it's imperfect will have a significant head start on the brands that wait for it to be polished.

What This Means for Your Business

The AI advertising market is projected to grow from $1.1 billion in 2025 to $26 billion by 2029.

It's a fundamental shift in where attention lives and how purchasing decisions get made.

Google still processes 14 billion searches a day. ChatGPT processes 37 million.

The platforms aren't the same size yet. But the trajectory matters. And the intent quality inside those 37 million prompts is unlike anything in digital advertising.

The question worth asking right now isn't whether ChatGPT advertising will matter for your business.

It's whether you'll have figured out the platform before your competitors do.
