On October 15, Google increased the number of links in its AI search answers and moved more of them higher up.
This is another step in the direction of a world where Google is completely AI-search.
Early research on which sites get linked is already coming in, and two other Google updates landed the same week.
What Google Changed

Google has two AI search features.
AI Overviews are the summaries at the top of a regular results page, and AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search.
Both already linked to sources inside the answer text.
Google now says it has substantially increased how many of those inline links appear, and that it’s showing them higher up in responses more often.
The links at the end of some responses now have image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
Article carousels for timely news are also expanding to more locations and languages.
Google is also testing a section at the top of some responses that shows the one or two official pages for a specific task, along with why each link is useful.
Google hasn’t published new optimization guidance with this update, and I haven’t seen click data on the new layout yet (it’s early).
How much traffic it shifts is still an open question.
What this does mean for brands trying to stay relevant in search is that AI Overviews are only becoming more important as Google prioritizes them more & more.
These changes may also stem from the negative sentiment that many marketers have had around AI Overviews being “zero-click” searches.
Pushing more clickable links into AI Overviews would certainly ease that pain.
Mentioned And Cited Are Two Different Things

AI answers do two separate things with a brand.
They can name it in the text, and they can link to its website as a source.
Semrush’s 2026 AI Visibility Index looked at both across 22 categories and four AI platforms.
Fewer than half of the 100 most-mentioned brands also appeared among the 100 most-cited domains.
Ford is a good example.
It ranked high for mentions and much lower for citations to its own website.
The difference matters because a mention shows up in the answer, while a citation is what gives a reader a clickable path to the site.
Being mentioned is great for brand awareness and a good sign for reputation.
But, citations are what drive people to your website.
What Kinds Of Pages Get Cited

Ahrefs found that ChatGPT leans toward original information over sites that mainly summarize other sources.
Reddit’s share of cited answers dropped from 19.1% to 2.3%, and Wikipedia’s dropped from 14.1% to 2.9%.
One reasonable way of thinking about this is that AI systems have little reason to link to a page that repeats what they (The AI) can already say.
Pages with information found nowhere else on the internet tend to give them a reason to quote them or reference them.
That includes your own data, your own pricing, and your own process written in plain language.
Someone asking “how to do business accounting” doesn’t need your website to answer the general question.
However, if you had some information that was particularly relevant to how accounting has changed over the last 12 months, that data or quote may be unique and relevant enough for the AI to bring you into the conversation.
Things To Look At This Month
- Test your category.
Ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode who they recommend in your space, and note which brands get named and which get linked. - Look for original information.
List what your business knows that nobody else publishes, such as pricing ranges, timelines, or results, and check whether it’s on your site. - Review your most visited pages.
Direct answers near the top, clear headings, and current dates make a page easier for both people and AI systems to use.

Google Ads
AI Max is a Google Ads setting that uses AI to find searches and write ad text.
Google keeps moving eligible Search campaigns, and Dynamic Search Ads, toward it.
Reports disagree on timing, so check the notices inside your account.
Two other changes are rolling out.
Channel prioritization lets a campaign fund your “High priority” channels first, and Performance Max asset groups can now be A/B tested.
Local Services Ads are also moving into Google Ads as a special Performance Max campaign, still charged per lead.
A reasonable first step is reviewing your search terms report to see whether AI Max is matching your offer.
Merchant Center
This is Google’s tool for sending product data to Shopping results.
It now has a checkout integration for AI Mode and Gemini, which means product, inventory, and location data in your feed can affect whether an AI recommends you.
Comparing feed titles, prices, and availability against your live site before the holidays fully kickoff would catch most problems.
